How to reduce video size without losing quality?

 These days your smartphone or your DSLR camera is awesome and powerful enough to record high quality video — but your head will only turn when you notice the size of the video file. The original file size becomes so large that all the space on your memory card runs out in an instant and you are not able to upload videos anywhere for the size you want.

The good news here is that you can reduce video size very easily — and without compromising video quality. But the problem is, if you can't change the correct settings, the size will be reduced but the quality will be lost. So by changing any settings the video size will be reduced, without losing quality? Let's take a look at the details, friends.


Choose the right software

Start with audio

  • Choose audio code, AAC (CoreAudio) or MP3. These are the Lossy compressed audio formats, which are very suitable for reducing video size. You can choose any one of these formats, even for any music or concert video file, but using a high beat-rate.
  • In the case of bitrate, choose 180 for most videos. If you have converted any music video file or concert video file, it would be better to choose high bitrate (256 or 320). I would advise not to move with the sample rate, if the sample rate can be reduced and more size can be optimized. But even then it is better to set the sample rate as default. You can set a sample rate of 32 for the human voice and 48 for the music file.

Choose the best codec and container

Ideally, when you record or shoot a video, you should use the highest quality, best codecs and containers. But when you are thinking of reducing the video size by converting videos, the most efficient codecs and containers should be used. Now the question is what are codecs and containers? And what is the difference between them? Look, friends, the codec is the method of encoding or decoding a video — through which a video is brought to the byte. Select H.264 as the codec. This is a very popular codec for any high definition video, and it is almost twice as efficient and advanced in compressing video from MPEG-4. This codec is recognized for almost all devices today.

Select MP4 as the container. MP4 file format is very efficient for compression and almost all devices today support MP4. Even YouTube, Facebook, and Vimeo support MP4 as their preferred container.


Reduce video resolution

Your phone may record 4K video, but you may not have a 4K ready TV or monitor. Most people have an HD Ready or Full HD TV, but to be honest, video resolution is not as important as you think. Resolution may reduce video size, but it does not make much difference to video quality. Even if your video resolution is low, if you watch TV from a distance, the up scaling technology and video bitrate on the TV will be able to give you much better picture quality. Check your original video resolution first and then choose any one resolution. In the Handbrake software, you can select the resolution of your choice from "Picture Settings" and you will also see a video preview before making a decision. If you are thinking of uploading videos to YouTube or Facebook, choosing 720p resolution would be best for you. Facebook binds your video resolution to 720p (meaning 1080p resolution becomes 720p even after uploading the video) িনbut YouTube will allow you to go up to 4K.


Bitrate is now the latest resort

Bitrate is the real factor in determining video quality. Now the question is, what is this bitrate? The answer is very simple, bitrate is the amount of data displayed per second. The more data that can be displayed per second, the more picture quality will be perfect, every detail can be noticed. Most cameras, such as DSLRs, use high bitrate to record video (as do most screen recorders). There are some rules for using video bitrate on YouTube (follow the chart below). You can convert any YouTube video using this bitrate. Better a poor horse than no horse at all.


Do not change the framerate

If someone tells you that "video conversion framerate should be reduced" - then you should definitely not listen to them. Every video expert and video hosting website advises not to reduce the video framerate. Therefore, it would be better to leave the time frame of the original recording.

24-30 frames per second is able to show the appropriate picture quality in the human eye. So logically if the framerate is lower than this you will see the stuck quality video, and the video will lose its smoothness.
