Data Model & Classification of Data Model


Data model: Collection of conceptual tools for describing data, data relationship, data semantic and data consistency constraints.

There are 3 types of data model namely--

(i) Object Based Logical Model

(ii) Record Based Logical Model

(iii) Physical model.

Object Based Logical Model and its Classification: The model used to describe data at logical and view level in database management is called Object Based Logical Model.

There are 4 types of Object Based Logical Model namely-

(1) Entity Relationship Model

(ii) Object Oriented Model

(iii) Semantics Data Model

(v) Functional Data Model.



Record Based Logical Model and Classification


Record Based Logical Model :

The type of data model used in database management for describing data at logical and view level is called Record Based Logical Model. However, this model is more used in specifying the Logical Structure of the database and also in providing Higher Level Description for the Implementation.

The classification of Record Based Logical Model is as follows--

(i) Relational Data Model

(ii) Network Data Model

(ii) Hierarchical Data Model

Difference between Object Based Logical and Record Based Logical Model:

Object Based Logical Model--


(i) In the field of database management, the model used to describe data at logical and view level is called object based logical model.

(ii) It is of four types, namely--

(1) Entity Relationship Model

(2) Object Oriented Model

(3) Semantics Data Model

(4) Functional Data Model.

(iii) Used for data processing.


Record Based Logical Model--

(i) The type of data model used by database management for logical and view level description is called Record Based Logical Model.

(ii) It is of three types, viz

(1) Relational Data Model

(2) Network Data Model

(3) Hierarchical Data Model.

(iii) Record based logical model is widely used for specifying and implementing database structure.
