Serverless computing means… wait!… Did I say "serverless"? Is computing again without server? Is there really anything called serverless? Well, technically it would be very difficult to understand the matter! And Wirebd is not famous for its technical discussion, but for its simple language! First of all, there is no such thing as serverless, but you can call it a type of marketing term. But you will know why it is called "Serverless" a little later from the following paragraph. So let's explain serverless computing in common parlance!
What is serverless computing?
You see, computing means there will be a computer, be it in front of you or in the background. Well, let's start from scratch… let's say you want to host a website. What do you do technically? Well, you will need a computer, to run a website you must have computing resources. Now it will not be empty computer, right? First you will need decent amount of hardware then you need to install operating system on the computer, then you need to install web server software. Then you can host and run your website.
And yes; There is the matter of configuring networking, firewall etc. Now you can also host a website on the following PC if you want (why is it a terrible idea to host a website on your PC?) Or you can host a website with a server computer hire from the hosting company.
So what does it take to host a website? Trouble managing a computer with a lot of technical knowledge, right? But you can't just host a website without these problems? Does it mean that the server does not manage the computer or does not install any software? - Yes, yes! And this is where the term serverless computing comes in!
Serverless does not mean that there is no server. Rather serverless means the user does not have to manage the server. You don't have to worry about how much RAM, how many core CPUs, how much bandwidth you need to run your website or host your app - everything will be managed here. You just host the website, you don't have to manage the computer!
Now there must be a server at the backend, and your site will be hosted in the cloud. Now that it is hosted in the cloud, the term serverless would be appropriate, but not that! Cloud means a server farm that is connected to the Internet. The whole thing does not become serverless at all. But you can say that you will get serverless experience from the service that is being provided to you in the name of serverless.
Advantages of serverless computing
The term serverless is used exclusively for business policy. This term tries to attract beginner type users, users don't have to configure any manual, no need to install any app manually, just host your website, the rest means the backend system will be managed by the cloud company.
Well remember, no file storage service like Google Drive has been launched yet. So what do you have to do to store files in the cloud? Yes, you had to hire a full server then install your own file manager software, manage the network, then you could host the file on the cloud server! But what do you have to do to use Google Drive? Nothing! You can start uploading files by just signing up, the configuration behind it, server, disk, network - everything is managed by Google!
Another interesting thing about serverless computers is that you pay for the amount of resources you are using from the server, you do not have to pay the bill on the entire server. There is no need to pay a monthly purchase of a fixed server plan. The bill will come after calculating how much time you are using daily.
But there are also server providers. The server software will set the amount of resources for your application according to the amount of resources needed on your site. When your site is not getting much traffic, just reduce the resources for your application. And that resource will make any client's application fast! Do you understand the matter?
How to use serverless computing?
Many cloud companies now offer serverless computing solutions. You are given a console access and you can manage your app with it. The rest is handled from the serverless service.
Amazon Web Services has a service called Lambda, which is basically a serverless computing service! You do not have to manage the server or pay the server charges, you have to pay the bill as long as your code runs, the rest of the backend services will be handled by Amazon itself.
Not only Amazon, but also Microsoft Azure and similar services. Serverless WordPress Hosting is now on the market! The static version of your WordPress site will be uploaded. You don't have to worry about web server, PHP version, database. The only site that everyone can see from the front end is the HTML static website, and in the backend WordPress will run just when needed!
