What are the differences between baseband and broadband transmission systems? How do repeaters and bridges work?
Difference Between Base Band and Broad Band Transmission Systems:
Base Band:
(1) In a baseband transmission system, the data sent from the computer is sent unaltered over the network connection.
(2) Modulation is not required in baseband transmission systems.
(3) In a baseband transmission system, multiple signals cannot be transmitted over a single pair of wires simultaneously.
(4) Low cost in baseband transmission system.
(5) Benefits are less available in baseband transmission systems.
Broadband:
(i) In broadband transmission system, the information received from the computer is modulated by high frequency and sent over the network connection.
(ii) Amplitude modulation and demodulation are required in broadband transmission systems.
(iii) In broadband transmission system it is possible to establish multiple connections simultaneously through one connection path
(iv) Cost of broadband transmission system is high.
(v) More benefits are available in broadband transmission systems.
Repeater, Bridge, Router and Gateway
Repeater: Repeater is a device which is used to amplify the signal. Before crossing the distance of 185 meters, if the signal is amplified using a repeater, it can travel another 185 meters. It works at the physical layer of the OSI model.
Bridge: When there is a need to connect two roads or a means of transportation over a river is needed, then we use a bridge. In computer terms, a bridge is a mechanism that connects two or more "local area networks" or LANs. That is, a bridge is a device that connects multiple network segments. It is a bridging table to keep track of the different devices on each segment. It works at the datalink layer of the OSI model.
Bridges are very similar to routers, but the difference is that routers can inspect data passing through it, or put up firewalls as needed. But Bridge does none of these things. It simply aggregates multiple LAN connections. However, it is possible to exchange data between multiple protocols through bridges.
